5 kite board comparison (re-edited the video)
2011 slingshot 17m Turbine. wind 11-12 knots
Naish alaia 5’9″ vs Litewave Wing 161 vs Litewave 179 Freeride vs Slingshot Reform 4’7″ vs Liquid Force Twin Skim 51″x 20″ – (part 2)
added the 179 Freeride board, & tried the Wing with surf straps
I actually prefer the Wing with the single NSI mono strap (like in 1st video)
Alaia; riding, the stance has to be mid board. with other boards i can step further back with the back foot to raise up the nose (to help with the waves) but not so with the alaia.
if i’m not centered just right… it won’t plane correctly in the water & will need a lot more power from the kite (which in light wind is already hard to do). i even tried riding it backwards (to use the wider nose to my advantage)… & i felt it did make a difference for the better, .. except the square ‘front’ & hitting waves. (looks like more testing to get the best feel & fit for the alaia)
the twin skim & reform are easiest to use & most forgiving. also lighter, smaller & more portable, & come with deck pads. definitively a plus.
Litewave 179 Freeride: old school board, wanted to see how it would do with the Mono strap. i was surprised how different it felt compared to the other boards.
The benefit is the shape … has the most rocker of all the rest & it made clearing the chop real easy. But because of the increased rocker, it felt way slower compared to all the other boards. I needed to work the kite more to keep going on the Freeride (in this ‘surf boardish setup’)
The 179 shines in the standard twin tip setup & i have used it in both light/high wind & bigger surf (with standard bindings), & the Freeride rides like a Cadillac.. smooth, easy on the knees, & very easy to stay up wind.
For the light wind i’d prefer the other boards.
(i updated the alaia review here & added the 179 Freeride.
see part 1 for a written description of the other 4 boards)
i actually like the Wing in this ‘surf-boardish’ use
next will place deck pad on the Wing to gain more traction… see how it is strapless?
wind was on-shore 10-13 knots
